ü All students will receive an AIAA Certificate of Completion
at the end of the course.
OVERVIEW
This course will provide the baseline for engineers and scientists at all levels who work in industry organizations, as well as vice academic and government organizations, to develop both financial and business acumen. The course techniques and guidelines were assembled by the instructor through his experience and expertise in financial analysis, as an educator and a consultant to some of the world’s leading aerospace and defense firms. The course begins with an introduction to the three main financial statements (e.g., income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows). This knowledge is necessary for anyone who desires to earn a leadership role within both for-profit and non-profit organizations. We will then discuss specific financial issues that can impact not only financial performance, but also firm competitiveness such as how firms allocate specific project costs, the DOD funding cycle, as well as tips to avoid losing funding simply due to timing mechanisms that exist when working with government organizations. The remainder of the course is devoted to understanding the long-term trends currently present within the aerospace, defense, and space industries, as well as discussion from industry experts who specialize in helping organizations locate government and external funding for their projects, inventions, and/or businesses, how to navigate the grant writing process, and lessons learned from creating start up organizations within the aerospace and defense industries.
